According to the dictionary an education is “the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life.” This essay will inform the audience of my opinion on what the value of an education means to me. I will expand on the value of an education not just by what’s attained by “formal education” but also by an “informal education” as well. I will also explain how much we gain just by going through life, which in itself is an education.

This is why I refuse to believe that a high school education means nothing. Had it not been for me completing high school I would not have been able to continue on to attain a post secondary education.
Throughout my life my focus has been solely on learning more about business and technology this is why when I was comparing universities throughout my junior and senior years of high school, I compared all the programs offered and evaluated how best it would accommodate me and my skills. I had to be sure that my own skills and weaknesses were factored into my decision while I prepared myself for a placement at a university I desired, especially one that specified in the fields of my interest. I knew that was the only way I could be sure that I was going to go to school for all the right reasons, such as experience, knowledge, development, and also to be prepared intellectually for society and maturity.
According to New York University communication professor Neil Postman once wrote: “Children enter school as question marks and they leave school as periods” (Armstrong, 1998, p.34). The education I was given in high school provided me with the skills I needed for both technology and business. However, I knew that I wanted to gain more information about business this way I choose to pursue a post secondary education in business
Why is Education So Important in Our Life?
When I started thinking about why education is so important, I remembered my high school years when I used to spend almost five hours a month on math homework, wake up at 6:00 AM and get ready for my PSAL soccer game after school. I remembered my teachers, school subjects, the study and the fun! I never really hated school. But I have seen many of my peers who hated going to school; I have had some friends who did not like the idea of studying. Some needed to be up in summer school for recovery. I personally was always focused because I wanted to become a software engineer. I know it will be hard and very challenging. However I believe I can handle the challenge. The first thing that strikes me about education is knowledge gain. Education gives us a knowledge of the world around us and changes it into something better. It develops in us a perspective of looking at life. It helps us build opinions and have points of view on things in life. People debate over the subject of whether education is the only thing that gives knowledge. Some say education is the process of gaining information about the surrounding world while knowledge is something very different. They are right. But then again, information cannot be converted into knowledge without education. Education makes us capable of interpreting things, among other things. It is not just about lessons in textbooks. It is about the lessons of life. One thing I wish I can do is, to provide education for all: no child left behind and change the world for good!!
